Concepts in Biophysics — Course as Negentropy Sequence

Eight-section Biophysics course designed as a deliberate disorder-to-order pedagogical sequence. Each section converted student disorder — disconnected biological observations — into structured understanding through formal ordering principles. The concluding section (Cybernetics) served as the meta-level synthesis revealing all prior sections as instances of one principle. The student's completion experience was itself a cognitive negentropy event.

Analog Computer Techniques — Course and Research, Physiology 412
1963–1968 · University of Illinois College of Medicine
No comparable course existed within the department prior to this proposal. A graduate laboratory course in the application of analog computing to physiological research was designed and taught, becoming, by the department's own justification, foundational to its expanding Biophysics Program. The course extended directly into the active research program: a 1966 Biophysical Society paper on the mathematical modeling and electronic analog of biological survival patterns drew independent outside interest from the American National Red Cross. Negentropy operating simultaneously as curriculum design and applied research methodology.

Fragmented 1995 IT structure — multiple disconnected units, no unified governance — converted into a coherent, unified system by 2004. Documented with reconstructed organizational charts (1995 fragmented and 2004 unified structures), timestamped primary sources, and the full institutional transformation arc across nine years of sustained administrative and technical intervention.
Documented subset — Technology Enhanced Classrooms (TECs): FA104 (925 SF) and FA108 (1,070 SF) — designed, constructed, and implemented under Moressi's direction. Pedagogically driven multimedia classroom environments with full A/V integration, student presentation capability, hearing-assistance accessibility compliance, and capital infrastructure investment (13 dedicated electrical circuits, floor distribution systems, concrete sawcuts for under-floor cabling). Presented at Emerging Building Technologies Conference, Las Vegas, February 3–5, 2002, and re-presented at NEIU University Day, March 7, 2002.

Copyright Law Expertise in the Digital Environment — Policy, Presentation, and Applied Technology

Sustained institutional ordering of copyright and intellectual-property governance during a period when the applicable law was itself still being actively defined through litigation. Chaired the Winthrop Computer Utilization Committee that authored the "College Policy on Copyrighted Material" (internal document, Ver. 050190:01, May 1, 1990), presented at the 1990 CAUSE National Conference and accepted into the CAUSE Exchange Library for national distribution (CSD-0443), with independent corroboration from CAUSE executive correspondence and national trade press coverage. Extended into applied technology with "Copyright Law Advisor," a rule-based AI expert system (VP-EXPERT shell) co-developed with Renée A. McCauley, presented at the 1994 ASCUE National Conference. Institutionalized at NEIU (1995–2004) as part of its first comprehensive IT policy suite, sustained through ongoing professional credentialing at Cornell University's Computer Policy and Law program (2000, 2002).

Full-service technology company (EIN: 58-1774457) founded and led by William J. Moressi concurrent with Winthrop University faculty appointment. Following retirement, volunteered as a research assistant at Lincoln Park Zoo under Dr. Lisa Faust, then a leading population biologist at the zoo and creator of PopLink, a demographic modeling program used industry-wide for managing endangered species population data. Work centered on a comparative software audit examining whether PopLink and the older SPARKS studbook program produced consistent results when analyzing identical population data, using the White-nosed Coati (Narica) as a fully worked example, with the same structural divergence pattern independently observed in Gorilla and Cheetah data from the broader 21-species survey.

Chicago Conservation Corps — Group Leader / North Park Village Nature Center

As a member of the Chicago Conservation Corps (C3), led a pilot study on tree identification, measurement, and location-tracking within a defined parcel of the North Park Village Nature Center (NPVNC) — a 46-acre nature preserve within the 155-acre North Park Village complex, managed by the Chicago Park District and adjacent to the NEIU main campus. Formally recognized by the City of Chicago, naming Moressi a Chicago Conservation Corps (C3) Leader for "Conservation Management of North Park Village Nature Center: A Pilot Study" (Certificate of Achievement, December 8, 2011). Approximately 50 trees were GPS-located, measured, and assigned permanent, unique species-coded tags.

Charlotte's Web — Community Computer Network, Volunteer

Volunteer participant in the Charlotte's Web coalition, a community Free-Net initiative converting Charlotte-Mecklenburg's disconnected public institutions — libraries, schools, senior centers, homeless shelters, healthcare facilities — into a unified public access computer network. Coalition led by the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County (PLCMC), with partners including local schools, Johnson C. Smith University, Central Piedmont Community College, and WTVI, backed by two federal grants: $450,000 (National Telecommunications and Information Administration, Dept. of Commerce TIIAP) and $25,000 (National Library of Medicine, AIDS/HIV information access). Total project investment exceeded $1.2 million. Volunteer service at St. Ignatius College Prep spanning multiple years: class supervision enabling faculty to attend professional conferences and lead the Junior and Kairos Retreat Programs, and a technical records-digitization project. Eleven years of accumulated student medical records, held in paper form, were electronically duplicated and placed on CD storage — formally credited by Principal Carole J. Manning in a February 2004 letter as a gift of "valuable time and talent." Paper records converted to structured, durable digital form entirely as volunteer service, decades after Moressi's formal IT governance career, in an unrelated institutional context.

Sustained volunteer service as an Exhibit Judge for the CPS High Schools North Regional / Area 19 & 20 Student Science Fair, confirmed across five occasions spanning six years, continuing from active NEIU tenure into retirement. Credentialed as Judge #297 across the 2002–2005 cycle, formally thanked by fair coordinators on multiple occasions for direct contribution to student research outcomes. By Moressi's own later written notation (2007 RSVP form), total judging appearances numbered approximately five or six.
